Card games for 3 players: rules for Hearts, President, Rummy and more

The Yolk’s On You illustrated game cover.

Three is an awkward number for card games. Partnership games like Spades and Euchre need four, and Speed or Gin Rummy want two. The games that work best with three are ones where everyone plays for themselves: three handed Hearts, President, Rummy, Cheat, Spoons and Texas Hold’em all play well with exactly three people and one standard deck. Here is how each one works, starting with three you can play at a table tonight.

Three handed Hearts

Hearts is a trick taking game where you try not to win the wrong cards. Remove one two from the deck so it divides evenly, most often the 2♦, and deal 17 cards each.

  • Before each hand, pass three cards to another player. A common rotation with three is left, then right, then a hand with no passing.
  • Whoever holds the 2♣ leads it. Everyone must follow suit if they can; if not, they may play any card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, and the winner leads next.
  • Each heart you take scores 1 point and the Q♠ scores 13. Points are bad.
  • You usually cannot lead hearts until someone has discarded one.
  • Take every heart and the Q♠ in one hand, called shooting the moon, and everyone else scores 26 instead.
  • Play until someone reaches 100 points. The lowest score wins.

With three, each player holds about a third of the deck, so you can count cards more easily than in the four player game. The Q♠ is also harder to dodge.

President

President, also called Scum and several ruder names, is a climbing game with a built in social ladder. Deal the whole deck; with three players two people get 17 cards and one gets 18. In most versions 3 is the lowest card and 2 the highest.

The first player leads a single card, a pair or three of a kind. Going around, each player must play the same number of cards at a higher rank, or pass. When everyone passes, the last person to play clears the pile and leads anything they like. The first player to empty their hand becomes President, and the last is the Scum. At the start of the next hand, the Scum hands their best card to the President, who gives back any card they choose.

House rules vary a lot here, especially whether passing locks you out until the pile clears and whether a 2 clears the pile. Agree on yours before the first deal.

Rummy

Basic Rummy works well for two to six players. With three, deal seven cards each, turn one face up to start the discard pile and leave the rest face down as the stock.

  • On your turn, draw one card from the stock or the top of the discard pile.
  • Lay down melds if you can: a set of three or four cards of the same rank, or a run of three or more consecutive cards in one suit.
  • You may also add single cards to any meld already on the table, including other players’ melds.
  • End your turn by discarding one card.
  • The first player to get rid of every card wins the hand. The others score penalty points for what they still hold: often 10 for face cards, 1 for aces and face value for the rest.

Four you can play online with two friends

If your three people are not in the same room, EggVerse has four card games that work with exactly three players, free in the browser with no download. One person creates a room and shares the invitation link; the other two tap it and ready up. Each game also has a solo mode against bots if you want to learn the rules first.

The Yolk’s On You is Cheat. Play one to four cards face down and claim a rank: the first claim is any rank, then the same rank or one higher, with Kings wrapping round to Aces. Anyone can call the bluff within three seconds. If any card was a lie, the player who laid them takes the pile; if every card matched, the caller takes it. With three of you, all three seats are human. A bot called Benny only joins when exactly two people play.

Spoons plays like the kitchen table version. Keep four cards, pass one to your left, and when you hold four of a kind, grab a spoon. Once the first spoon is gone, everyone may grab. There is one fewer spoon than players, so with three people there are two spoons, and the player left without one is out. Grab before you qualify and you are out too. Incoming cards pass on automatically after four seconds, so nobody can stall.

Texas Hold’em gives each player 500 free table chips, with no real money involved. Three handed poker moves quickly, because you are in one of the blinds two hands out of every three. Rotten Luck is the most chaotic of the four. Each turn you may play action cards, then usually draw one card to end your turn. The deck hides one fewer Rotten Egg than there are players, so two in a three player game. Everyone starts with a Frying Pan that saves them once. Last egg standing wins.

One that does not fit: Speed is strictly for two players. Save it for when one of your three steps away.

Which one should your three play?

  • Quiet and thoughtful: Hearts or Rummy.
  • Loud and quick: Spoons or Rotten Luck.
  • Bluffing and reading faces: Cheat or Hold’em.
  • A game that carries a grudge into the next hand: President.

Can you play Hearts with three players?

Yes. Remove one two, usually the 2♦, deal 17 cards each and play as normal. Many groups rotate passing left, right, then no pass.

Can you play Spades with three people?

Spades is built for two teams of two. There are three player variants where everyone bids alone, but rules differ a lot between groups.

How many cards do you deal in Rummy for three players?

Seven each is standard for three or four players.

Can three people play Cheat online together?

Yes. On EggVerse, The Yolk’s On You seats two to eight players, so three friends can share one room with no bots.
