Sumo has a ring. Yolk Sumo has a frying pan, and the frying pan is on. Every egg starts on a big circle of cool butter. The rim is hot. Shove your rivals onto it, stay off it yourself, and be the last egg on the butter. You can play it free in your browser, solo or with up to seven friends, with nothing to download.

The pan is the real opponent

The butter doesn’t stay big for long. At 20 seconds it shrinks, and at 40 seconds it shrinks again, down to a small cool spot in the middle. We didn’t want the pan to snap smaller with no warning, so a warning ring shows where the edge is heading and the butter slides inward over a few seconds. You always get a moment to scramble toward the middle. Whether you make it is between you and the other eggs.

The butter is also slippery near the rim. Let go of the controls out there and you keep sliding, which is exactly how a lot of confident eggs end up cooked.

One button, a lot of drama

You steer with WASD or the arrow keys, and Space is your dash: a burst of speed across the pan. On a phone, hold to steer, then flick or tap with a second finger to dash. The dash recharges in three seconds, and for half a second after you launch you can’t steer. That half-second is the whole game. Aim first, then commit.

In a collision the slower egg gets knocked back harder. Standing still in the middle is not a strategy. It’s an invitation.

When two eggs bump, the faster one wins the exchange: the slower egg flies further, and a big hit scores the faster egg 50 points. So keep moving, and pick your moment to hit someone who has just stopped.

Rival eggs with opinions

Solo, you share the pan with three rival eggs. We didn’t want all three to chase you like a very small angry parade, so each rival picks its own target. Eggs that are close by and near the hot edge look tempting. A target another rival has already claimed usually gets skipped. And a rival that you just shoved will want a word with you. On a crowded pan, the rivals are happy to fight each other, so you are not the default target.

When an egg cooks, its shell cracks first and then its yolk stays on the pan. It is a little dramatic. It is also a very clear way to see who just lost.

How to win Yolk Sumo

• Head for the middle before each shrink at 20 and 40 seconds. The warning ring shows where the new edge will be.
• Keep moving. In a bump, the slower egg takes the bigger knock.
• Line up so your rival is between you and the rim, then dash. You can’t steer for half a second after launching, so aim before you go.
• Don’t coast near the edge. The butter there is slick and you’ll keep sliding.
• Let rivals fight each other. With friends, whoever is still dry at 60 seconds and closest to the middle takes the win.
