How to Play Speed Online With Friends
By eggverse · · 3 min read

Speed is a two player card race: both players act at once, placing cards one rank higher or lower on either centre pile. In eggverse, you win by clearing all twenty of your cards. Suits do not matter, and Ace connects King and two.
If your friend takes approximately three business days to decide their next move, this is their chance to surprise you. There are no turns to wait for.
Start your race
Open Speed, choose Play with friends, share the room invitation, and ready up together. A friends room has two players. Play solo is also available if you want to learn the controls first. The game runs in a browser without a download.

Read the rule examples before starting. Once both eggs are playing, the middle piles can change while you are choosing a card.
Which cards can you play?
Choose a card from your visible hand, then play it on either centre pile if its rank is adjacent to that pile's top card.
| Top card in a centre pile | You can play |
|---|---|
| Seven | Six or eight |
| King | Queen or Ace |
| Ace | King or two |
The two piles give you two possible routes. If the left pile is a seven and the right pile is a Queen, scan for sixes, eights, Jacks and Kings. A card that is blocked on one pile may work on the other.
Your five card hand refills automatically. Emptying those five visible cards is not the whole job: you must clear all twenty cards assigned to you. When both players are stuck, fresh centre cards flip so the race can continue.
Controls and a useful first round habit
On a computer, use 1–5 to select a card and the left or right arrow to choose a pile. On a phone, use the on screen controls. Learn both pile controls before inviting your fastest friend.
Scan both piles after every move instead of committing to the same side. Your opponent can change the card you were about to play on; if a move stops working, check the new top rank before trying again. Speed rewards attention as well as fast input.
Does Speed allow matching numbers or stacked cards?
The published eggverse rule is one rank higher or lower, rather than the same rank. Follow the game's accepted moves rather than adding a family's matching number or stacking house rule. Different games called Speed can have different layouts and rules; this guide describes the version you can play here.
Can three or four friends play one Speed match?
No. A friends match is for two. For a larger group, run separate pairs and rotate opponents between completed matches. For everyone at one table, try The Yolk's On You, which supports two to eight friends.
What happens when neither player can move?
Fresh centre cards flip when both players are stuck. Your hand refills automatically during normal play.
Do suits matter?
No. Look at rank, not the card's illustrated suit.
Play Speed. One warm up, one rematch, and then you can discuss whether your friend's very dramatic clicking helped.
