Sumo wrestling rules explained simply, plus a sumo game to play with friends

In sumo, you win by forcing your opponent out of the ring or by making them touch the ground with any part of their body other than the soles of their feet. That is nearly the whole game. There are no points, no rounds and no time limit to run out: one bout, usually over in seconds, and the first wrestler to step out or go down loses.
The ring
Professional sumo takes place on a dohyo, a raised platform of packed clay. The fighting circle on top is about 4.55 metres across, marked by straw bales sunk into the clay. Two white lines in the middle mark where the wrestlers crouch before the bout. Stepping on the straw is fine; touching the ground outside it, even with a heel, loses the bout.
How a bout starts
Before a bout the wrestlers go through a ritual of stamping, squatting and throwing salt to purify the ring. Then both crouch at their lines and the bout begins with the tachiai, the initial charge, when both wrestlers put their fists to the clay and launch at the same moment. A false start is called back and the charge is done again.
Ways to win
- Push or carry your opponent out of the ring.
- Throw, trip or pull them so that a knee, hand or any other body part touches the clay.
- Your opponent uses a forbidden move, which loses the bout on the spot.
- Your opponent does not show up, which counts as a win by default.
The Japan Sumo Association recognises 82 named winning techniques, from simple frontal force outs to rare throws. You do not need to know them to follow a bout. Watch the feet: whoever touches down outside, or falls first, has lost.
What is not allowed
Sumo looks rough, but the list of fouls is clear. Open hand slaps and hard shoves are legal. These are not:
- Punching with a closed fist.
- Pulling hair, including grabbing the topknot.
- Poking at the eyes or the solar plexus.
- Choking or grabbing the throat.
- Kicking at the chest or waist.
- Slapping both ears at the same time.
- Bending back an opponent’s fingers.
- Grabbing the front, vertical part of the belt that covers the groin.
Who decides close calls
A referee in a silk robe, the gyoji, announces the winner by pointing a war fan toward that side. Five judges sit around the ring. If any of them disagrees with the call, they meet in the ring to discuss it, with help from a video replay judge, and may confirm the decision, reverse it or order a rematch when both wrestlers touched down at the same moment.
Rounds and tournaments
There are no rounds within a bout. In professional sumo there are six main tournaments a year, each lasting 15 days, and top division wrestlers fight once a day. The wrestler with the best record at the end wins the tournament. There are no weight classes in professional sumo, so a smaller wrestler can face someone far heavier. Amateur sumo does use weight classes and has men’s and women’s events.
A sumo game online: Yolk Sumo
Real sumo is one on one. Yolk Sumo, a free browser game on EggVerse, keeps the push out idea and turns it into a party game: eggs shove each other around a hot skillet, and any egg that slides onto the hot rim gets cooked. Play solo against three rival eggs, or create a room for two to eight friends.
| Sumo | Yolk Sumo | |
|---|---|---|
| Ring | Clay circle about 4.55 metres across | A skillet whose cool centre shrinks at 20 and 40 seconds |
| How you lose | Step out, or touch down with anything but your feet | Touch the hot rim and you are cooked |
| Players | Two | Solo with three rivals, or two to eight friends |
| Length | Usually seconds | Up to 60 seconds |
| If nobody is out | The bout continues | At the buzzer, the egg closest to the middle wins |

The tachiai has an equivalent too. Press Space, or flick on a phone, to dash. The dash recharges in three seconds, and you cannot steer for half a second after launching, so line it up first. When two eggs collide, the slower one gets knocked back harder, which rewards charging over waiting. Near the rim the pan is slippery, and if you stop steering there you keep sliding.
A real sumo habit that helps: stay off the edge. In the dohyo, a wrestler pinned against the straw has nowhere left to go. On the skillet, the egg nearest the middle has room to dodge, and wins if the buzzer goes before anyone else is cooked.
Sumo questions, answered
How long does a sumo match last?
Most bouts are over within seconds. A very long one may be paused for a short rest and then restarted from the same grip.
Can you slap in sumo?
Yes, with an open hand. Closed fist punches are against the rules.
What happens if both wrestlers fall at the same time?
The judges discuss it, and if they cannot separate the two, they order a rematch.
Can I play a sumo game online with friends?
Yes. Yolk Sumo on EggVerse is a free browser sumo game for two to eight friends, or solo against three rival eggs.
